We live in a very fast pace society. So much so that we never quite know when to slow down and just take a break. We don’t really know how to take it slow for a while. We are constantly on the move.
R.E.L.A.X. is just an acronym to help you remember to slow done every now and then, and not to get burnt out.
R for Rest
You should always take time out of your day to rest, just a short period. If you do not rest periodically you will become burnt out. Not resting will also negatively impact your health.
The United Nations International Labor Organization Said, “Workers in the United States are putting in more hours than anyone else in the industrialized world”. We live in a nation of long hours and little to no rest.
If you were to take a trip to Barcelona you would be shocked to find the whole city shuts down at 11 o’clock and they come back at two. This concept of taking such a drastic rest seems completely backwards to a nation were a 70 hour work week is becoming the new standard.
At 11 o’clock they go home, eat, or maybe take a nap. They understand the concept of rest and its priority in the work day.
We now check 80 percent of our email on mobile devices and smartphones. Every person with a smartphone literally has there office with them at all times. Don’t bring your work home with you, leave it at the office. Rest is very important for health and well-being and you should make it a priority in your life.
E for Enjoy
Remember you should make time to pursue hobbies outside of work. Spend time with your children and your spouse. Every second of the day does not have to be serious. Don’t brush over every event or activity involving your children.
Do not avoid or let work take priority over spending time with your spouse. Don’t let your relationship deteriorate because of your career.
Some psychologists are bringing light to something called TINS syndrome, Two Incomes No Sex. Couples put so much focus into work, getting a bigger house, a better car, more expensive clothes, but never take the time to enjoy each other. I am no psychologist or relationship expert but I can tell you with certainty this does not contribute to a happy relationship.
Whether you drive a Smart Car or a Lamborghini, remember to never let the pursuit of money take your happiness.
L for Laugh
Laughter is the best medicine, and I believe this to be true. If there is one thing that can shine a little light in a bad situation is a good laugh.
Have you ever laughed so hard it left you feeling good for the rest of the day? Everyone has, and there is medical evidence to back that up. Laughter reduces the stress hormones and increases all of the euphoric hormones. Fake laughter is also known to give you similar if not the same effects as genuine laughter.
I’m pretty sure fake laugher isn’t quite as effective as a good gut-busting laugh but it definitely does not hurt.
If there is one thing you should always do to brighten up a bad day is laugh.
A for Appreciate
The Dictionary’s first definition of appreciation is thankful recognition. Being thankful for everything you have worked so hard for is essential for your happiness. Appreciation is an essential trait in order to be happy with what you have attained. You might think if you could just get a slightly better car then you would happy but that’s not the case if you aren’t appreciative of your current car.
You have to recognize what you have AND be thankful for everything. The “and” is very important. Calm down, sit back, and appreciate everything you have earned. It will alleviate your stress and increase your happiness.
X for X out the bad stuff
X out the bad stuff in your world. Now there are some things that you may not be able to eliminate but there are a whole lot of things you can. Don’t listen to depressing music. Did you know people who listen to country music have a much higher suicide rate than anyone else? Now I like the tune of country music but some country songs are just so depressing. “You know, my wife left me, she left with my best friend and took my dog too”. This won’t contribute in any way to your happiness.
The same goes for television, don’t watch depressing or negative shows. I know they are interesting but they can just drag down your mood.
You should also eliminate any friends that are always being negative and never have anything positive to say. If there always spouting negativity, it will rub off on you. Always try to stay away from any unnecessary negativity that could negatively influence your day.
